This directory contains materials for the Perl scripting class. The virtual_machines folder contains a 64bit (Bioinfo_class.vmwarevm.zip) and a 32bit (Ubuntu.vmwarevm.zip) virtual machine to be used with the bioinformatics class. You will need at least 10GB (20GB recommended) of free disk space to run either virtual machine. Please download it and use the VMware Player software on Windows (or Linux) to run it. The VMware Player software can be downloaded from: http://www.vmware.com/products/player/ The username for this machine is "bioinfo" and the password is the same. Please change the password immediately after download to something secure (secure passwords are at least 8 characters long, are not based on a word you would find in a dictionary or encyclopedia, and also contain numbers and special characters). Unfortunately, VMware Player does not exist for the Macintosh platform. However, the Macintosh OS is itself UNIX based. There is a system of UNIX extensions called fink that is very useful for running bioinformatics tools. It is available at: http://finkproject.org/ To install, click on the "Download" link on the homepage and follow the instructions.
